Nexium is used to treat an acute gastrointestinal (GI) condition when other treatments have failed. Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, decreasing the amount of the acid produced by the esophagus, and increasing the flow of food into the stomach.
Nexium is taken by mouth and is usually taken for a few days or a few weeks, depending on the condition being treated. Nexium is taken only when you are directed to by your doctor. It is important to take it exactly as your doctor tells you. If you have trouble swallowing capsules, your doctor may give you a delayed-release capsule for up to 4 weeks.
Nexium is available in several strengths. For adults and children over 6 years old, the usual starting dose is 20 mg (one tablet), taken as needed, every 4 to 6 hours. The dosage may be decreased to 20 mg or increased to 20 mg.
It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist carefully. Do not change your dose without first talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Nexium may be taken with or without food.
